Wear a sardonyx or for thee,
No conjugal felicity;
The August-born without this stone,
`Tis said, must live unloved and lone.

The children of August have a delightful selection of birthstones, from the traditional sardonyx to the bright green peridot.  The sardonyx, a variety of the black onyx that has bands of red, is known as a stone of strength and protection.  The grassy green peridot is symbolic of protection and success.
