Valentine's Day Story
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of
both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. In ancient Rome, February 14th was a holiday to honor Juno- a Roman goddess, also known as the Goddess of women and marriage. The following day,
February 15th, began the Feast of Lupercalia.
There are different legends ascribed to the origin of Valentine's day. The most popular among these is that it is inspired by St. Valentine, a Roman priest who was sentenced to death for defying
King Claudius. When Emperor Claudius II believed that single men fought better than those married and with families, he strictly banned marriage for young men- his potential soldiers. Valentine,
unable to tolerate this injustice, covertly continued to sanctify marriages for young lovers. Claudius, angered by his defiance, sentenced him to an agonizing death by beating with clubs on the
14th day of February, 270. Legend also has it that St. Valentine left a farewell note for the jailer's daughter, his alleged lover and signed it "From Your Valentine". In 496 A.D. Pope Gelasius
dedicated February 14 to honor St. Valentine.
Gradually, February 14 became the date for exchanging love messages and St. Valentine became the patron saint of lovers. The date was marked by sending poems and simple gifts such as flowers.
There was often a social gathering or a ball.
On the eve of the festival of Lupercalia, the names of young Roman girls were written on slips of paper and placed into clay jars. The men would then draw a girl's name from the jar to be their
partners during the celebrations. Often, they would fall in love and would marry.
In Wales, wooden spoons carved with hearts, keys, keyholes were given as gifts on February 14th.
Long back, children would sing this verse on St Valentine's day
Good morning to you, valentine; Curl your locks as I do mine ---
Two before and three behind.
Good morning to you, valentine.
Some other interesting beliefs for young lovers are-
1- It was once believed that sighting of a robin flying on Valentine's day by a woman meant she would marry a sailor, and if the bird seen was a sparrow, she would marry a poor man and be very
happy, and if a goldfinch, she would marry a rich man.
2- Think of five or six names of boys or girls you might marry, and then you twist the stem of an apple, recite the names until the stem comes off. You will marry the person whose name you
are saying when the stem falls off.
3- Pick a dandelion that has gone to seed. Take a deep breath and blow the seeds into the wind. Count the seeds that remain on the stem. That is the number of children you will have.
4- If you cut an apple in half and count how many seeds are inside, you will also know how many children you will have
5- According to some traditions if a young woman receives a clothing gift from a young man and she chooses to keep the gift, it means she will marry him.
